The project
Balaio project is a journey into the world of oral tradition and folk wisdom, inspired by the cultures of Indigenous peoples, Quilombolas, healers, and herbalists. It draws on handmade crafts, ancestral knowledge of plants, and empirical wisdom that goes beyond scientific and intellectual verification—where intuition takes center stage and transcends what meets the eye.
The performance embodies the symbolism of manual labor and raw materials, and its interweaving extends beyond the object’s structure, becoming an exploration of movement and a point of connection between bodies, while suggesting relationships among the artists in this production.
Synopsis:
Our “balaio” will feature circus arts, dance, musical games, enchanted beings, knowledge, and folk tales. All these elements, skillfully woven together, will create an imaginary and sensory world, where the transformation of raw materials into props and stage objects will highlight cycles, redefine the concept of time, and stimulate the senses.
Our daily backyard: between harvests, manual labor, preparing remedies, and consulting with plants, the ritual is part of our daily lives; the magic always arrives at the right time, and challenges create tensions that dissolve into choreography, as intertwined bodies support and repel one another in this great communal gathering, where cycles are revealed in an eternal renewal.
Technical Requirements
Space: 8 x 8 meters, Height: 5 meters (minimum)
Floor: Wooden stage and/or linoleum. Flat, smooth, and level.
Electricity: Electrical outlets required for the sound system.
Sound:
– A sound system with 4 speakers
– 1 8-channel mixing console (with phantom power)
– 8 microphone cables, 20 meters each;
– The cables needed to connect the sound system to the mixing console.
